Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), an American Slave, abolitionist, and womens' rights activist, was honored today at the US Capitol by the National Congress of Black Women. A bust of Ms. Truth was placed on display at Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor Center. The effort to have this done has taken almost 10 years, making her the first African American to have a memorial bust in the Capitol. On hand for this great occasion was first lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Sojourner Truth, whose given name was Isabella Baumfree, was also known for her speech "Ain't I A Woman?"
